DOE’s Energy Conservation Standards for Battery Chargers
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) finalized its energy conservation standards for battery chargers in June 2016.
Standard Update Details
In March 2012, DOE published a notice to establish energy conservation standards for battery chargers. DOE updated its analysis and revised its proposed approach, resulting in a supplemental notice published in Sept 2015. In June 2016, DOE adopted the proposed energy conservation standards for battery chargers in this final rule.
Products included in the regulation:
A battery charger is a device that charges batteries for consumer products, including battery chargers embedded in other consumer products.
Wireless chargers that are only designed to operate in wet conditions (e.g. electric toothbrushes), USB-charged or DC power-charged devices.
Exemption:
Medical devices that require Federal Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) listing and approval as a life-sustaining or life-supporting device.
Requirements
These standards will apply to all products listed in the below table and manufactured in, or imported into, the United States starting on June 13, 2018.
