After the enactment of Reese's Law in 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved the rule 16 CFR 1263 outlining the requirements for consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries. Consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries are required to comply with ANSI/UL 4200A-2023.

Scope: Covers all consumer products containing button or coin batteries

Transitional Period of Enforcement Discretion: Until March 19, 2024

According to the standard, there shall be construction to prevent children from removing the battery. The standard also provides guidelines for the use of warning symbols and statements on products, taking into account the available space. Here is an example of the warning requirements for packaging button cell or coin batteries:

Compliance with ANSI/US 4200A-2023 is required starting from October 23, 2023. However, considering the challenges related to limited testing availability and to avoid any hardships, the Commission has granted a transitional period of 180 days, which will conclude on March 19, 2024.

In addition, the packaging of button cell or coin battery shall comply with the warning requirements mentioned in the standard. The effective date of the warning requirements of button cell or coin battery packaging will be effective on 21 September 2024.
