Electrical Vehicle Charging Plug & Socket

Cars powered by electricity are growing on road! A few years ago, you could count the number of available plug-in cars on one hand, with a couple fingers left over. Today, there are many models offered from more than a dozen different brands. 

The Testing  

Safety and durability of the charging plug and socket is essential. Intertek Hong Kong is capable to deliver testing and certification for EV charging plug and socket. 

Plug Testing

BS 1363-1:2016

The cyclic loading test shall be conducted for 28 continuous days consisting of non-stop “on and off”. The plug shall then be checked by inspection. 

Plug incorporating electronic circuits shall conform to immunity and emission requirements of BS EN 61000 standard series. 

Plug profile dimensions have to be compact which is shorter than normal plug profile. 

Socket Testing  

BS 1363-2:2016

Socket shall be tested to IP rating with plug inserted or when no plug is inserted. 

The socket shall be protected by enclosure against access to hazardous parts, harmful effect due to ingress of solid foreign objects and water. The conformity shall be checked by tests of BS EN 60529.

Socket operation shall be performed at a power factor of 0.6 lagging and 5,000 cycles. 

The cyclic loading test shall be conducted for 28 continuous days consisting of non-stop “on and off” with plug remaining engaged throughout the test duration.

Socket incorporating electronic circuits shall conform to immunity and emission requirements of BS EN 61000 standard series. 

USB circuits incorporated in a socket shall conform to BS EN 60950-1 or BS EN 62368-1 and BS EN 62680-1-1. 

Adaptor Testing  

BS 1363-3:2016

Adaptor incorporating electronic components, e.g. USB and Surge Protector, are included within this standard. 

Fused Connection Testing 

BS 1363-4:2016

Connection unit with IP rating shall be tested according to BS EN 60529. 

Conversion Plug Testing  

BS 1363-5:2016

Plug listed in IEC TR 60083 exceeding 13A, e.g. EU 16A plug, is not included in the scope of the standard.
