Congratulations to Intertek Hong Kong on your 40th Anniversary!
2013 marks the 40th anniversary of Intertek in Hong Kong and to celebrate, our Hong Kong office held a Customer Day on 3rd December, with the theme of '40 years of Excellence as your Trusted Partner'. The day was a great success, with close to 200 government officials, industry leaders and core business partners joining together to share their thoughts on the latest business trends. The event provided insights for guests to formulate their upcoming strategies and received a lot of positive feedback.
For the event, a 'Time Tunnel' was setup to showcase Intertek Hong Kong's key milestones and development over the past 4 decades. The Time Tunnel experience takes visitors through the history and of Intertek HK and its parallels to the development of the city.
Intertek HK started as 'Labtest' in 1973 with only 3 employees occupying a 1000sq/ft office. The key testing services included textile, toys and footwear. Intertek subsequently moved to its current location in Kowloon and expanded the office area to 16,000sq/ft.
By the 1980s employee numbers had increased a 100-fold with over 300 people and began electrical testing in 1984. In 1988, Intertek acquired ETL, which became the foundation for our future Electrical Division, with Hardlines testing starting the same year.
In the '90s, employee numbers had grown to over 600 and service scope further expanded to eyewear, juvenile product testing, cargo services, Government & Trade Services and Supplier Management.
Our growth continued and Intertek soon became the largest commercial testing lab in a single building in Hong Kong, occupying close to 80% of the total building. In 2010, we set up the first full capacity LED testing lab in HK, developed our wireless testing and enhanced our super chemical centre.
Employee numbers surpassed 1400 in 2013, when we were recognized as the Centre of Knowledge and New Technology equipped with expertise, knowledge and highly competent industry experts. Today, our service offering in HK is much more than testing. We provide value added services to our customers, helping them to get into global markets and establishing themselves as trusted brands. HK is the global hub for sourcing and Intertek has built a reputation for understanding our customers sourcing patterns and needs and being the easiest company to do business with.
