Assuring quality and safety of their products

As the technology partner of Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP), Intertek has been helping local start-ups to understand the importance of safety and quality compliance when designing their products through sharing professional knowledge and insights.

On 20 July 2019, Samson Leong, Senior Manager, Electrical, and Terry Chan, EMC Manager, Electrical of Intertek Hong Kong shared his experience on product safety and EMC testing at the 2nd Cohort of the iDM2 training held by HKSTP. Enthusiastic and positive responses were received from the audience.

HKSTP is Hong Kong’s largest R&D base, a leading incubator in the city to provide a fertile ground for innovation and technology. It caters supportive initiatives and resources to technologies clusters including Biomedical Technology, Electronics, Green Technology, Informative and Communications Technology and Material and Precision Engineering. iDM2 - “Idea, Design, Manufacture and Market” - is a loop to describe the idea realisation journey. The six-month program expedites and supports start-ups in product development, including “Design for Manufacturing” training/ workshops, Greater Bay Area workshop and clinic/ consultation/ coaching with manufacturing experts.

We are also working with an award-winning local start-up from Hong Kong which designs and manufactures a self-sanitizing-door-handle with photocatalytic coating and backlight technologies. This innovative invention has garnered accolades like the Grand Award for Second Place in Materials Science at the 66th Intel ISEF, Gold-Award at the 44th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva and The Most Outstanding Exhibit at the Yale Science & Engineering Association, Inc. Intertek supports innovation and R&D by working closely with start-ups, and in this case, offers performance and chemical testing of the self-sanitizing-door-handle.

Intertek Wireless expert, Melvin Nip, Electrical and Network Assurance, has already trained some twenty start-ups on how they could meet the critical challenges in the Internet of Things (IoT) Era through the Global Acceleration Academy (GAA) of HKSTP.

As a leading Total Assurance provider to industries worldwide, Intertek will continue to assist start-ups that could become the brands of tomorrow by working with them to improve product safety and quality. We play a key role in cultivating the tech ecosystem in Hong Kong, assuring local innovations are up to international standards and helping push forward Hong Kong’s Smart City vision.
